Home Sleep Apnea Test

While there are many sleep study facilities available for testing, they are often in very high demand and have a months long waiting list for an overnight sleep study.  The good news is that now you can take a home sleep apnea test for just such an occasion. Quality sleep is a physiological need and cannot be ignored. These services devices come in different forms.

In some home sleep apnea tests, a technician goes to the home and hooks the patient to the electrodes. In other cases devices are placed on the wrist and finger just before going to bed.  Whatever test works best for detecting sleep apnea is OK in my book.

Once diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea it is time to start exploring treatment options.  In rare or severe cases, your doctor might suggest some type of surgery.

Different people have different needs for central sleep apnea treatment to be less inclusive. This contrasts with obstructive sleep apnea where tissues in the back of the throat relax so much that they can reduce and/or block the airway (often the source of snoring). Apnea, to give a general description, is a serious sleep disorder that is linked and identified with loud snoring and frequent breathing interruptions during sleep.

When your brain senses that you are not breathing, it wakes you up so you can reopen the airway however this is so brief that you won’t remember the next morning.

If everyone had their sleep apnea test at home, would sleep clinics even matter in that case?  These facilities also record eye movement, brain activity, breathing, heart rate, muscle activity, the amount of airflow in and out of the lungs and what percentage of oxygen is in the blood, so there would likely still be a use for them.

It is important to adjust your sleeping position during the sleep apnea home test, such as on your side or with your head and shoulders elevated about 30 degrees.  This can reduce instances of obstructive apnea, as the soft tissue in the rear of the throat is held at an angle that reduces collapse. It will tell the technician reading the results whether there was improvement in different positions.

I lived with it for more than 10 years, before I decided to do anything about it. After a long wait I was finally given an overnight sleep test.  Things could have gone so much faster if I had been able to be tested for sleep apnea at home.

Most patients do not notice a change in their breathing pattern when they are asleep or even when they awake. This makes detecting sleep apnea even more difficult as these individuals are unaware of their apneas at night.  They simply feel tired all the time with no idea as to why. If you believe you suffer from it, it is advisable to consult a physician for the recommended form of sleep apnea testing so that you can obtain relief and prevent future health problems.

This sleep disorder, does not allow proper air flow through the body, and when you put your heart through enough strain, something has got to give. Therefore, it is important that you know the symptoms so you can get treatment.

That’s where we stand today in the overall scheme of things. The results of the home sleep apnea test will indicate the number of apnea events, how long each event lasts, blood oxygen level, percentage of sleep spent in REM, snoring, etc., and allows the physician to diagnose the disorder and its severity. How to cure sleep apnea once you are diagnosed, however is quite another story.
